Inspired by the off-kilter lyrics of Syd Barrett, ‘Flewid’ is a collection of flow-of-consciousness and/or otherwise random poems. Chances are that most of them won’t make a lot of sense to you, but that’s somewhat intentional. While this collection is difficult to understand, it has moments of clarity hidden throughout. Included in this collection is the poem that spawned my IM screen-name.

Just a little longer
Keep the train rolling
Song after song
Night after night
Another highway
Another town
Another cheering crowd
So loud
Just a little longer
Gotta keep it going
Shovel the coal
Burn the midnight oil
Another highway
Another town
Another cheering crowd
So loud
Just a little longer
Keep the world turnin’
Spin with the tops
Run from the cops
Another highway
Another town
Another cheering crowd
So loud
Just a little longer
Keep the train rollin’
Song after song
Night after night
Another highway
Another town
Another cheering crowd
So loud

He’s got a simple life
Tryin’ to make ends meet
And keep the ground
Stuck to his feet
Sometimes
He just lets things
Slip away
He’s an American dreamer
Runnin’ on empty
He’s got fire in his eyes
And concrete boots.

I can’t think of anything
Worthwhile or worth saying
Locked up in my room
With my computer
I’ve been playing
Heading over to theonion.com
Or readin’ about a new suicide bomb
Writer’s block, yeah
Writer’s block
Write down a few words
Try to get those juices flowin’
Stuck up in a rut
With my computer
Monitor’s glowin’
Click over to MacMinute.com
See what new product’s comin’ along
Writer’s block, yeah
Writer’s block
I can’t think of anything
Worthwhile or worth saying
Locked up in my room
With my computer
I’ve been playing
Check my emails, click into AIM
Listen to music, play some X-Plane
Writer’s block, yeah
Writer’s block
Writer’s block, yeah
Writer’s block

Star light
Star bright
Fifteenth star I see tonight
Sitting in the corner
Making faces at the moonlight
Making faces at the moonlight
He sees
Shadow
Falling softly in the sun
He sits in the corner
Making faces at the moonlight
Making faces at the moonlight
So is he you?
Was he me?
Is he blind or
Can he see
What he does to you
What he does to me
Hasn’t he got his reasons?
Hasn’t he got a song?
Hasn’t he gotten tired?
Hasn’t he got along?
Star light
Star bright
Fifteenth star I see tonight
Sitting in the corner
Making faces at the moonlight
Making faces at the moonlight

There are five rabbits in a hole
Bob, John, Frank, Billy, and his girlfriend
Billy’s girlfriend is a pretty rabbit
All the others like her
Bob, John, and Frank are lonely
They all want the girl
Well they can’t split her four ways
So Frank kills ‘em all and takes the girl
Stupid rabbits
There were three girl rabbits in the hole next door
They heard what happened and came over
Now there are five rabbits in a hole
Jill, Cathy, Amanda, Cathryn, and her boyfriend
Cathryn’s boyfriend is a handsome rabbit
All the others like him
And so on and so forth
There’re usually five rabbits in the hole
Live ones anyway
Stupid rabbits

Golden strands of oldies bands
Reach upon me tightening their grip
And it slips
That maybe I’m not really who I’ve been
All these cold dark years
All these cold dark fears
Yeah, maybe
Maybe not really
Gleaming gourds of peppered hoards
Breathe upon me righting their wrongs
And their songs
That sing about the facts of feathered life
And these cold dark years
All these cold dark fears
Yeah maybe
Maybe not really
The goldfish floats on floaty boats
He eats and eats and eats and eats
Grows some feets
And maybe I’m not really who I’ve been
All these cold dark years
All these cold dark fears
Yeah maybe
Maybe not really

She’s got pretty, dark, Oriental hair
She almost got stuck in the doors of the Metro
She smiles like a chocolate
She’s beautiful, but she’s got to go
And a blue-shirted government man
Would like to know her name
These city people are all the same

The genie tips her head
To the left side and I’m
Trying to see right through her
I’ve never been so opaque
Before I figure out that maybe
Transparency leaves too much
For other eyes to see
She bright-eyes her way
Until today and that’s the way
To say I never went away
Until today
The genie tips her head
To the right side and I’m
Trying to stand beside her
I’ve never been so far away
As I’ve been since I just maybe
Couldn’t see what I’ve left
Out in the open
She bright-eyes her way
Until today and that’s the way
To say I never went away
Until today
The genie tips her head
To the front side and I’m
Trying to see right through her
The three wishes force me
Before I think and then maybe
Transparency leaves too much
For other eyes to see
She bright-eyes her way
Until today and that’s the way
To say I never went away
Until today

One world
Or are there two
Or three
Or four
God, they’re multiplying

The monkey looked at the clown and yelled
“Hey man, you’ve lost your touch”
The clown shot the monkey
A stiff drink and said
“You may be right, little monkey boy
You may just be right”
And midnight seldom happens in the daylight
Unless it’s time
A paragraph might be a poem
If it rhymed
But now it’s time and the words don’t rhyme
And the 7-Up’s made from lemon and lime
And you’re not right this time
The monkey looked at the clown
And laughed…

You run it like a kingpin
You’ll tear down those walls
You try and you try and
You know it all
Run run run, run like it hurts
Tastes like sugar and
A hand up her skirt
Ooooh, it’s not about tonight
Ooooh, you’ve got it good alright
You know it like a true song
Like your dirty little love
You take it and you leave it
Fits like a glove
Go go go, go as you will
Guns in your pocket and
Knives for the kill
Ooooh, it’s not about tonight
Ooooh, you’ve got it good alright
You know you can’t get out now
It’s too late to get out now
Seems like nobody knows you’re
Shadow boxing with your eyes closed
You tighten like a noose now
As the bricks fall down
You drive and you drive and
You’ve run out of town
Run run run, run like it hurts
Tastes like sugar but
It rubs like dirt
Ooooh, it’s not about tonight
Ooooh, you’ve got it good alright
Shadow boxing with your eyes closed

Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Always talked politely
All the men shook his hand
All the girls gave him a hug
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Always cleaned his shoes
They paid him for his opinion
They wrote him fan letters
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Six fingers on his left hand
He bought expensive speakers
Broke up with his girlfriend
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy
Peter Spoo was a nice boy

We’re gonna tear down your fences, break through the wall
Gonna tie up your defenses and bomb your mall
Take the tall make ‘em short, hunt the rebels down for sport
Can’t say no, can’t say yes, you’re the worst, we’re the best
Takedown sellouts, build up more clout
It’s the Thunderclap Nightmare
Thunderclap Nightmare, yeah yeah!
Gonna horde up on canned food and write another song
Tie you to the bedpost and you’ve known all along
That the lies burn the truth, shoot the breeze like John Wilkes Booth
Can’t say yea, can’t say nay, you know what I’m tryin’ to say
Takedown sellouts, build up more clout
It’s the Thunderclap Nightmare
Thunderclap Nightmare, yeah yeah!

I woke up in California
Surrounded by gubernatorial candidates
They say it’s the fruit and nut state
I believe them
I woke up in an L.A. alley
With pieces of corn stuck in my shoes
A guy walks up to mug me
And what have I got to lose
I said, “I’ve got about fifty cents
And a broken old Timex knock-off
What are you gonna do, man
Gonna shoot me over that?”
He looked confused
Like something crawled up inside him
And took a long, cold, knotty nap
I couldn’t even try to describe him
Or his frontwards baseball cap
I woke up in a midwestern
Farmer’s daugter’s bedroom closet
They say she’s got a dark side
I think I’ve seen it
I woke up in a sullen shelter
With cots and little cubicle walls around
A guy walks by with an iPod
And I can still hear the sound
It said, “Hey now, you’re an all star
I don’t know why I didn’t come
My name’s the real Slim Shady
Feels like I’ve got a disease”
I looked confused
Like something crawled up inside me
And took a long, cold, knotty nap
I can’t even try to explain it
But I’ll point it out on the map
I woke up in Afghanistan
People running, air full of fear
Then I realized I was in New York
And it’s been a wacky couple of years

I close my eyes to write the song
Rolled over in bed and it’s gone all wrong
The song was writing me.

Logic is for the birds
Singing their funky song
All they wanna do
Is boogie with the hawks
Get down with the eagles
Umph with the osprey
Sing with the Beatles
Logic is for the birds
Ooooh, achmafooma
Ooooh, achmafooma
Makes me go all zooma
Flaming achmafooma
Achmafooma
Logic is for the birds
Logic is for the birds
Logic is for the birds
Ooooh, achmafooma
Ooooh, achmafooma
Makes me go all zooma
Flaming achmafooma
Achmafooma

They read books on the train
Red books, blue books
Good books, just the same
They pack us in with ties, and grin
After all, that’s why we came.

9:32pm
Standing in the pouring rain
Loosing my sanity
Loosing my clarity
Leaning against the bark bench
Trying to keep my head up
Above those soldiers in the trenches
With their little metal cups
Remembering what it was like in ’85
Those dark alleys, that piercing eye
There was blood on the ground
But still blue in the sky…
9:48pm
Standing in the pouring rain
Loosing my sanity
Loosing my clarity
Crouched under the park bench
Trying to keep my head down
With those soldiers in the trenches
With their knives and pink nightgowns
Remembering what it was like in ’85
Those dark alleys, that piercing eye
There was blood on the ground
But still blue in the sky
Still blue in the sky
Still blue in the sky…
Still blue in…
Your…
Eyes…

Call me crazy
The oceans fly by underneath
Call me crazy
Saltwater faking sea
And maybe…yeah maybe
If the water weren’t so wavy
I’d be clear
If the clouds weren’t so soft
I’d have a heart
If the dark world lightened
And the silence heightened
Maybe I’d find my way home
And the parabolic energy flows
The stars search out in the dark
Call me crazy
The cloudforms ain’t calling me now
Call me crazy
And maybe…yeah maybe
If the water weren’t so wavy
I’d be clear
If the clouds weren’t so soft
I’d have a heart
If the dark world lightened
And the silence heightened
Maybe I’d find my way home
Maybe I’d find my way home
Maybe I’d find my way home

Staple my lip to the floor
Close the door
I don’t need this anymore
No don’t need this anymore
Take me away and I know
Where to go
Thundertrain wants me to know
That I don’t need this anymore
Thundertrain won’t you take me away
Thundertrain won’t you make my day
Thundertrain build me a way
Thundertrain take me away, take me away today
Ohhh, thundertrain
Taper my wings to the sky
Tell me lies
I’ve never learned to fly
But I don’t need this anymore
Take me away and I know
I’m alone
It’s the only way I’ve known
That I don’t need this anymore
Thundertrain won’t you take me away
Thundertrain won’t you make my day
Thundertrain build me a way
Thundertrain take me away, take me away today
Ohhh, thundertrain
Ohhh, thundertrain
Put your images in my brain
Thundertrain
Thundertrain
Thundertrain

Shoestring ecstasy baby
Land your aeroplane
In my eyes
Come fly the friendly skies
I wanna be your flight attendant
Ruffle my feathers and
I’ll serve you some peanuts
Show you how to work
The inflatable slide
Shoestring ecstasy baby
Land your aeroplane
In my eyes
Come fly the friendly skies

Yeah, I could turn around and look around
And pad the ground with decibels of sound
And wonder what you do when I’m not around
But that’s never been my style
And I’m tired, I’m just tired, I’m so tired
Tired, tired, tired all out
So I could try around and cry around
And fly around until I touch the ground
And walk around some tiny little town
But I’d walk out after a while
And I’m tired, I’m just tired, I’m so tired
Tired, tired, tired all out
Tired, tired, tired all out
Tired, tired, tired all out
Tired all out
Tired all out
Tired all out
Tired
Tired
Tired
