Scott Bradford: Off on a Tangent » Books

Scott Bradford has been building web sites and using them to say what he thinks since 1995, which tended to get him in trouble with power-tripping assistant principals at the time. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from George Mason University, but has spent most of his career (so far) working on public- and private-sector web sites. He is not a member of any political party, and brands himself an ‘independent constitutional conservative.’ In addition to holding down a day job and blogging about challenging subjects like politics, religion, and technology, Scott is also a devout Catholic, gun-owner, bike rider, and music lover with a wife and two cats.

Over the years I have read quite a bit by and about Stephen Hawking. Hawking, a brilliant theoretical physicist and cosmologist, excels at communicating complex scientific concepts to laymen. His most well-known work, A Brief History of Time, was first published in 1988 and has sold well over ten million copies. It is among my favorite [...]

I have had a long-standing fascination with World War II because, as I see it, the conflict marked an unprecedented turning-point in human civilization. It was the quintessential ‘good vs. evil’ story on a scale that had never been seen before and, through the incredible sacrifice and dedication of the soldiers of the Allied Powers, the good [...]

The big news in political circles this morning is the new book by former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan which paints a not-so-pretty portrait of President Bush, especially related to the Iraq war and Hurricane Katrina. This is notable, in my opinion, in that it is the first book (that I’m aware of) accusing [...]

My favorite author is Robert A. Heinlein, so it was a real pleasure to see him discussed in the pages of today’s Wall St. Journal. Heinlein’s work, for those of you haven’t read it, is incredible. While his earliest novels were published in the 1940s, they have stood the test of time are are—with rare [...]

Behold, happy is the man who God correcteth; therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty—Job 5:17. I admit to having a pro-Heinlein bias—he is my favorite author—but, frankly, he deserves it. Robert A. Heinlein is possibly the most influential science-fiction/speculative-fiction writer in history, and I believe he is unequivocally the best. I have [...]

Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek and has been the star of several Priceline.com commercials, is not known for being a writer. What surprised me was that the book wasn’t half bad. Benton Hawkes is a diplomat who [...]

The story follows Winston Smith in 1984 London, which is then part of a super-country known as Oceania [...]
