Scott Bradford: Off on a Tangent » Reviews

Scott Bradford has been building web sites and using them to say what he thinks since 1995, which tended to get him in trouble with power-tripping assistant principals at the time. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from George Mason University, but has spent most of his career (so far) working on public- and private-sector web sites. He is not a member of any political party, and brands himself an ‘independent constitutional conservative.’ In addition to holding down a day job and blogging about challenging subjects like politics, religion, and technology, Scott is also a devout Catholic, gun-owner, bike rider, and music lover with a wife and two cats.

This year’s list hasn’t seen much change from the last, a welcome shift from last year’s slew of new introductions. What few changes there have been to existing models have usually been inoffensive, and there have not been many new-for-2012 models introduced. The Kia Soul and Toyota Prius, while still ugly, have dropped off the [...]

I used to have a BlackBerry—the ‘Bold’ 9000. I liked it quite a bit and, for its time, it was a fine phone. I very seriously considered replacing it with another BlackBerry but decided to give Palm another chance with its WebOS operating system. After Palm’s implosion, I ended up choosing Android.
Unfortunately, my Kindle 2—which was my first e-reader—met its untimely demise when I, suffering from a 24-hour stomach bug, dropped it from a height of three or four feet onto a hardwood floor. The impact damaged the e-ink display; the top one or two inches quit working. I replaced it with a Kindle 3 (Wifi [...]

Just over one year ago, Palm—the mobile computing company known for the Palm Pilot and one of the original smartphones, the Treo—was absorbed by Hewlett-Packard (HP). I was a long-time Palm supporter, having owned a Palm OS-running Handspring Visor Pro, a Palm Treo 650 (my first smartphone), and later a WebOS-based Palm Pre Plus.
Back in March I built Excelsior, my first home-built PC. It has been serving me wonderfully and I have no serious complaints. It did run a little hot since I’m always pegging the processor at 100% with my Boinc projects, so I added an aftermarket cooler and an extra couple of fans after the initial [...]

I wrote just over a year ago about how dishonorable our society has become in many ways. One particular area I pointed out was in business how things are advertised very simply (e.g., ‘unlimited Internet!’) while the reality is often much more complex and contradictory (e.g., ’2gb per month’—which is not ‘unlimited’). Another area of [...]

It was idiotic because Melissa had been a Cigna customer for years without interruption. Insurance companies can only hold preexisting conditions against you if you have had a break in medical insurance coverage; [...]

I’ve always been a fan of science fiction, but many of my favorites in the genre did a poor job of actually predicting the future. The proof of that is that many of my beloved sci-fi events and stories, written to occur well in the future, have already ‘happened.’ If their writers had been right [...]
