Have you ever been angry at a company—particularly when they say you owe them money—and are tempted to pay your bill with coins just to annoy them? We’ve all been there, but people always take the simplistic approach of paying in pennies.

Coin Drop is a groundbreaking web application that helps you compute how to pay a troublesome bill in roughly equal amounts of the various denominations of United States coinage. Why pay your $500 bill with a simple 50,000 pennies when you can pay with a confusing jumble of 1,219 quarters, 1,221 dimes, 1,219 nickels, and 1,220 pennies?

The program lets you pick and choose your coinage, so if you hate quarters but love those stupid dollar coins you are in luck. It’ll even tell you how many rolls you need to get from the bank. Enjoy!

On April Fools Day 2009, Off on a Tangent appeared covered in annoying, obnoxious banner ads. The site carried the following announcement:

New Advertising Policy

As most of you know, I have long had a policy of placing some limited advertising on my site in an effort to cover its operation costs. Unfortunately, this has not covered those costs and Off on a Tangent has operated at a loss throughout its entire existence.

In an effort to reduce my expenses in these tough economic times, I cannot continue to operate this web site at a loss. As such, I’m adjusting my advertising a bit in hopes that the site will start bringing in enough cash to at least pay for its own annual hosting. If not, I may end up having to shut down (unless the government is willing to offer me a bailout!).

Thanks for your support and patience. Please let me know if you find the new advertisements to be too distracting!

For April Fools Day 2008, the site faded away…90 seconds after loading it each time. It appeared at the same time as my Website 20 launch, so I put them together to confuse people. The Website 20 launch message included this message:

I’m happy to announce that today, the first day of April, I have launched a major revision to my web site. Version 20 marks my shift from the Joomla content management system to WordPress. The most important new feature made possible by this switch is Auto-Fading Text, which encourages the reader to read my site quicker and more efficiently (and makes the text nearly illegible if they do not). Read on to learn more details about Auto-Fading Text and the other new features.

Auto-Fading Text: Auto-Fading Text is a new feature I’m developing in conjunction with the WordPress team to encourage blog and web site readers to read content faster and more efficiently. This cutting-edge technology slowly reduces the brightness of web site content over approx. 90 seconds until it is nearly illegible, making it necessary for the reader to speed-read or risk squinting and eye damage. Users who are slow readers may be required to refresh the page one or more times to finish content, which is annoying and further reinforces the need to read quickly.

Today, the first day of April, I’m proud to announce the launch of System 6 (Website 18.4), which brings this web site compatibility with the cutting-edge ‘Macintosh’ computer from Apple. The Macintosh, with 128kb of RAM, 3.5″ floppy drive, graphical interface, and a unique new device called a ‘mouse’, is the harbinger of things to come in the computer industry and I’m very happy I was able to make this site compatible with it and it’s crisp monochrome bitmap display. With these kinds of high resolution graphics becoming available to the general public, the ‘World Wide Web’ might actually take off in the next ten or fifteen years!

On April Fools Day 2006, my site appeared in pink and purple hues and labeled as Katie Johnson: Off on a Tangent. This entry now includes the explanation given, two blog entries from “Katie”, and a link to the site as it appeared throughout most of the day on April 1.

‘Off on a Tangent’ Turned Over to Katie Johnson

Beginning today, the first day of April, Off on a Tangent will become Katie Johnson’s personal website. This change comes as Scott Bradford—who has managed the site since it began in 1995—transitions to a position as senior editor of Intersanity.com.

Katie is a 13 year old student at Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston, Virginia, and is expected to increase editorial focus on pop-culture and local gossip. Katie retains ownership of all previous Off on a Tangent content, but is expected to purge most socio-political items (in addition to remaining items specific to Scott) in the coming weeks.

Scott will remain on Off on a Tangent staff to advise and assist Katie until April 15, 2006, and he and Katie will both contribute content during this transition period. Effective April 15, the site’s URL will change to http://katie.eeltank.com.

Additionally, these two blog entries were posted:

Jeremy Asked Kiera Out! **OMG**

So, like, last night Janie had a party over at her house, and while we were there Jeremy asked Kiera out!!!!!! OMG theyre like SOOOOOOOO cute together, and I’m so happy they’re finally go out!!!

The party totally rawked too. mostly it was in the basement, but we watched ‘Maid in Manhattan” in the living room later on. Janies dad made us turn it off before it was over thogh, because he wanted to watch the news ***ICK***

anyways, me & Janie & Kierra are going to themall in a few to pick out dresses for the spring dance in 3wks, so I’ve got to get ready! I’m going to wear my new hoodie from Express!!

***GUH*** THE MALL WAS LIKE DEAD!

So like I go to teh mall with Janie& Kiera, and it was like dead. there was nobody there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a total waste of time and we were totally borrrrrrrrredddd.

so we decided 2 go to the dollar theater and we watched “Big Mommas House 2″. .. it was k, but not so great. But we saw some guys from school that were pretty cuuueteeee! One of them looked just like Ace on Amerrican Idol & he is so dreamy :)))

My dad watches Idol—don’t know why, and he likes Taylor. He’s okay I guess, but so wierd!! I really want Ace to win. Paris is k too.

anyways thats all for now. I need to work onn the website and get rid of all this stupid stuff about Scott. UGh, none of it is about important stuff that real people wantto read! Its all stupid politics and stuff, and all these stupid pictures & articles &quotes & crap have GOT 2 GO.
