Statue of Liberty’s Crown to Stay Closed

Very briefly, I wanted to point out an article that appeared on the Associated Press wire last week. For reasons the National Park Service has not sufficiently explained, the Statue of Liberty’s crown is going to remain closed indefinitely. The crown was closed following the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks and has not been open to visitors since.

This is a particular pet-peeve of mine, as it is a sign that we have let the terrorists win. Because of the 9/11/2001 attacks, we can no longer visit some of the most beautiful and exciting places in our own country. We can’t climb the Statue of Liberty, and we can no longer climb the Capitol steps here in Washington or even enter the building (except on tours).

Increased security, I can understand. Closing our national treasures to the people of this great land, I cannot.
