Kerry Chooses Senator Edwards as Democratic Running Mate

Senator John Kerry (MA), presumptive Democratic nominee for the 2004 Presidential election, announced this morning that he has selected Senator John Edwards (NC) as his running mate. Kerry made the announcement this morning at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Kerry’s vice presidential selection process has been the subject of much secrecy and speculation over the past week, with many observers focusing on Edwards, Senator Dick Gephardt (MO), and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

Edwards, who finished second in the Democratic nomination process, has had a short-but-impressive political career following many lucrative years as a personal-injury attorney. Edwards was elected to the Senate in 1998 and, powered by his well-spoken manner and relative youth, became a top-level contender for the presidency in 2004.
