An interesting point/counterpoint about homework appeared in USA Today this week. The paper’s editorial stance is that our educational system has fallen behind those in many other countries, and lowering the amount of homework assigned to students would only make things worse. The editorial writer states, “If anything U.S. schools are guilty of spending too little time on academics,” and “Surveys of international studies show the homework loads of U.S. students near the bottom.”

COFUMC—’06 Annual Conference Report
I had the honor of again attending the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church as a lay delegate from this congregation. The Conference was held two weeks ago—from June 11th through the 14th—in Hampton, Virginia and was presided over by our bishop, Bishop Kammerer.
2006 Annual Conference—Amendment & Remarks for Resolution #1

Note: These were my prepared remarks for a proposed amendment to Resolution #1: A Resolution on Resolutions at the 2006 Annual Conference Session of the Virginia Conference United Methodist Church. The resolution itself can be found on Page 137 of the Book of Reports (PDF link). The proposed amendment was co-written by Rev. Rob Vaughn and me; the explanatory remarks are my own.
